Introduction to OrientDB
OrientDB is a 2nd Generation Distributed Graph Database with the flexibility of Documents in one product with an Open Source commercial friendly license (Apache 2 license). First generation Graph Databases lack the features that Big Data demands: multi-master replication, sharding and more flexibility for modern complex use cases.
OrientDB is incredibly fast: it can store 220,000 records per second on common hardware. Even for a Document based database, the relationships are managed as in Graph Databases with direct connections among records. You can traverse parts of or entire trees and graphs of records in a few milliseconds. Supports schema-less, schema-full and schema-mixed modes. Has a strong security profiling system based on user and roles and supports SQL amongst the query languages. Thanks to the SQL layer, it’s straightforward to use for those skilled in the relational database world. OrientDB Training Bangalore.
It is a multi-model database, supporting graph, document, key/value, and object models, but the relationships are managed as in graph databases with direct connections between records. As said earlier, It supports schema-less, schema-full and schema-mixed modes. It has a strong security profiling system based on users and roles and supports querying with Gremlin along with SQL extended for graph traversal. OrientDB uses a new indexing algorithm called MVRB-Tree, derived from the red–black tree and from the B+ tree.
OrientDB has been designed to be very fast. It inherits the best features and concepts from Object Databases, Graph DBMS and modern NoSQL engines. OrientDB manages relationships without the run-time costly join operation, but rather with direct pointers (links) between records. No matters if you have 1 or 1,000 Billion of records, the traversing cost remains constant. OrientDB has been designed to be very fast. 2nd Generation GraphDB : Imagine the power of a Distributed Graph Database engine with the flexibility of a Document Database all in one product. This is OrientDB.
Fully transactional : supports ACID transactions guaranteeing that all database transactions are processed reliably and in the event of a crash all pending documents are recovered and committed.
Graph structured data model : native management of graphs. Fully compliant with the Apache TinkerPop Gremlin (previously known as Blueprints) open source graph computing framework.
SQL : supports SQL queries with extensions to handle relationships without SQL join, manage trees, and graphs of connected documents.
Web technologies : natively supports HTTP, RESTful protocol, and JSON additional libraries or components.
Distributed : full support for multi-master replication including geographically distributed clusters.
Run anywhere : implemented using pure Java allowing it to be run on Linux, OS X, Windows, or any system with a compliant JVM.
Embeddable : local mode to use the database bypassing the Server. Perfect for scenarios where the database is embedded.
Apache 2 License : always free for any usage. No fees or royalties required to use it.
Lightweight : a full server has a footprint of about 1 MB.
Commercial support is available from Orient Technologies.
